Why did you want to volunteer?
I was already working with people with learning disabilities and wanted to continue this in London. I thought taking part at Heart n Soul would be a great opportunity. I also wanted to see what the different challenges and rewards would be of working with people with learning disabilities in a big city compared to the countryside.
So after you sent your first email, what happened next?
I was contacted by Holly (Heart n Soul’s Training and Taking Part Coordinator) and met her for a chat. We talked about the upcoming Squidz Club and Do Your Own Things sessions. A few weeks later I went along to the Do Your Own Thing Saturday sessions and started working with Heidi Rustgaard (Do Your Own Thing dance tutor) and the dance group. We came up with ideas for our performance at the club and I also offered participants some one-to-one support too.
What was it like working with the dance participants?
It was fantastic, they are a great group. It was a brilliant experience performing with them at the club.
What advice would you give to someone
who wants to volunteer?
I would say have fun and show you’re happy to be there.
See yourself as part of the team.
